Play the Game

This is an in-house (non-travel) hockey program for ages 10 & Under.  Each player has the chance to put their skills to the test in a fun, competitive environment.  Participants learn the basic game and team concepts while building important characteristics on and off the ice: TEAMWORK, RESPONSIBILITY, and RESPECT.  Twice a week, for 10 weeks, players are led by NY Rangers staff.  It is an exciting way to meet new teammates and play some hockey.  At the end of the season, we celebrate everyone's accomplishments by hosting a Junior Rangers Jamboree for all of the players in the league (following COVID-19 safety protocols).

Your League Fees Include: ($395)

  • 1 game plus 1 practice every week per season
  • No long distance travel as all games are hosted at the Andrew Stergiopoulos Ice Rink
  • Junior Rangers jersey (limited to your first registration)
  • Celebratory Junior Rangers Jamboree at the end of the season (*Tentative based on COVID-19 safety mandates).

GENERAL SPIRIT OF PARTICIPATION AND FUN

  • More participants get a chance to play ice hockey, and will experience a feeling of success when playing.
  • The same exciting, fun environment is created as in a "real" game.
  •  More and less gifted children will benefit from close/tight action on the ice.
  • Children are excited and motivated to continue playing hockey.

Hockey will be more appealing and rewarding to a wider range of children and their parents.

THE SMALLER THE ICE, THE BIGGER THE COMPETITION.

When the ice is sectioned, the better players get better because they’re working in tighter spaces and are forced to make quicker decisions. Instead of capitalizing on a breakaway, they’re practicing their stickhandling and decision making. And the players who need a little more help, improve because they’re touching the puck more. They get to see the better players up close and learn from them, plus, they get more individualized instruction from coaches.

Since the ice is smaller, coaches have more time and ability to work with players who need the most help. Cross-ice games and practices are crucial to a player’s development. There are many out there who insist their kids need to learn offsides and positioning. But at a young age, we focus on skill development and long-term benefits for the kids, whereas the specific details of the game can come later. One step at a time. We use our ice time efficiently. It helps everyone gain skills by providing increased competition - not just with other players, but with themselves.

New York Rangers Learn-to-Play Program

All instruction is provided by the NYR Hockey Development team, partnered with our Great Neck Park District coaching staff.

This is a 10-week introductory level co-ed hockey program which caters to players ages 5-10. A max capacity of 25 participants is permitted for each session and space is limited, so it is important to register as soon as possible.

Learning to play hockey is more than just learning a game. More than skating, passing and stick-handling, hockey is about responsibility, respect and teamwork.  Learn to Play on-ice instruction plans have been developed in collaboration with experts from USA Hockey and Hockey Canada and taught by certified instructors and led by National Hockey League Alumni.

The program fee is a low $250 which includes head-to-toe equipment, for your child to keep!  (However, there is a participation fee associated with the program which offsets ice and coaching expenses).

Choose Sunday, 9-10 a.m. OR 10:30-11:30 a.m. (two options- you can only register for one).

Registration is through the Rangers website - CLICK HERE.
