Rick Xu, a Scout in Great Neck's Troop 10, was ready to advance to Eagle Scout level. After approaching the Great Neck Park District he was ready to attain his achievement...
The rank of Eagle Scout is earned by a Scout who has completed an Eagle Scout Project, has advanced through all previous ranks, has earned a minimum of 21 merit badges, has demonstrated Scout Spirit, and has held leadership positions within their troop.
For his project, Rick approached the Great Neck Park District with a project to install 61 botanical placards (paid with funds he raised on his own) for trees in Allenwood Park and the Village Green. The Park District happily agreed. Trees were selected for their maximum visibility and uniqueness. The signs exhibit both the common and Latin names for the trees, assisting visitors in identifying tree varieties.
Rick's project took place on Sunday, 1/17 at Allenwood Park and Monday, 1/18 at the Village Green. With the help of 11 scout volunteers, the installation of the placards took approximately 2 hours in each park.
If you have a chance to visit one of these parks, be on the lookout for the signs that Rick provided on various trees. We hope Rick advances to Eagle Scout. He deserves it!
